Open Accelerator: 78 projects in the field of Life Sciences

Seventy-eight applications received at Zcube – Zambon Research Venture – in response to the Open Accelerator 2018 call for projects that closed on 30 June.
Seventy-eight projects, of which over 40 on the Central Nervous System and 19 on the Respiratory System, the two therapeutic areas selected as the specific focus of the third edition of the acceleration programme.

Open Accelerator has shown itself to be an international initiative, with a third of the projects coming from abroad thanks to direct scouting activities and a network of partnerships established in many countries. The responses in the various research areas is also interesting: 27 in the Wearable and Digital Health area, 6 in Big Data, 27 for Medical Devices, Biomarkers and Diagnostics and 7 in the Drug Delivery System area.
Furthermore, 11 applications were added relating to projects aimed at developing new molecules.

“Thanks to very stringent requirements and a very specific focus, the response was excellent”, comments Giovanni Rizzo, Chief of Innovation Division, Zcube, “and supports the decision to dedicate the 2018 call to the therapeutic areas where Zambon has developed expertise and where it is carrying out ambitious research projects”.



As soon as the call was closed the selection process began with the support of various experts, advisors, key opinion leaders and investors. The list of the most deserving projects will be finalised and made public by the second week of August.

The selected projects will participate in the acceleration programme in partnership with Deloitte's Officine Innovazione and with the support of the initiative's partners: Italian Angels for Biotech, Innogest, Premio Marzotto, Unicredit StartLab, Bird & Bird legal firm.

Aimed at encouraging further development of the projects, the programme will take place from September 14th to the end of November and will include a mix of on-site sessions at the OpenZone scientific campus near Milan (Bresso) and online, customised for the various startups. It will also offer robust mentorship by various experts with scientific and business skills.

At the end of the programme the best startups will have the opportunity to receive a seed investment up to a maximum of 100,000 euros (per project) and to start a strategic partnership with Zambon.
