Awarded the winners of the Open Accelerator 2018, the startups that are planning the solutions of tomorrow.

A sphere to reduce the essential tremor of the hands and to allow patients to perform daily activities; shoes with an integrated device that oversees the motor behavior of patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and suggests an adjustment of therapy to the specialist and prevents the risk of falls; a digital stethoscope connected to the smartphone that detects the sounds of the lungs and foresees the exacerbations; a blood test for the early diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. These are the winners of the third edition of Open Accelerator who received a seed investment, the opportunity to start a strategic partnership with Zambon and consulting and legal services to facilitate their entry into the market.

Below is the list of winners and dedicated investments:

  • Prindex: a blood test for the early diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, not invasive, based on a simple blood sample - Federico II University, Naples, Italy. 100.000-euro seed investment;

  • Vilimball: Therapeutic device, shaped as a sphere, able to temporarily reduce the essential tremor of the hands. The patient, holding it in his hands for a few minutes, can receive temporary relief from this disorder by having the opportunity to carry out daily activities - Kaunas University of Technology, Kaunas, Lithuania.
    50.000-euro seed investment and Zambon Partnership Engagement;

  • Mobile GaitLab: Motion sensors for patients suffering from Parkinson's integrated in orthopedic shoes that continuously record patient gait data that neurologists can track through an app– Erlangen Universitu, Nürnberg, Germany.
    50.000-euro seed investment and Zambon Partnership Engagement;

  • LungPass: Digital stethoscope that, combined with an application based on the Machine Learning, allows patients suffering from COPD to remotely monitor sounds from the lungs and keep track of their conditions to prevent exacerbations - Minsk, Belarus.
    30.000-euro seed investment and Zambon Partnership Engagement.

Finally, the four startups will have the opportunity to get office spaces in OpenZone for one year for free.

In addition, the Cameroon Diagnos, protagonist of a special fast track for the design of an app that remotely connects patients and specialists, was awarded a special prize of 10.000-euro

To these acknowledgments are added the awards of the partners of the initiative:

  • Generali Welion has awarded Mobile GaitLab with an investment of 10.000-euro.
  • Deloitte Italia has awarded Mobile GaitLab with of 10.000-euro and Parkintest and Prindex with 5.000-euro each, in in-kind consulting services
  • The international law firm Bird & Bird will offer 16 hours of legal assistance to Prindex and 8 hours each for Lung Pass and Spyras.

Minimum Requirements to apply

You are eligible to apply if your project meets the following requirements:

  • Patent granted or filed (or proprietary software), or at least a defined robust IP protection plan;
  • Proof of Concept, Prototype or at least Prototype Development Plan in place;
  • Business Plan, Business Model or at least an exhaustive Executive Summary.

Preferential Selection Criteria:

  • Multi-disciplinary team with at least 1 team member working full-time
  • The presence of founder’s investments and/or co-investors

Acceleration Program

The Program:

  • 12 weeks program with onsite and off-site sessions (12 onsite session and 16 off-site sessions)
  • From 14.09 to 18.11
  • Onsite sessions: one weekend (3 days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday full time h9,30 – 18) every three weeks
  • Offsite sessions: tailored individual sessions for each project on Tuesday and Thursday every week
  • Events: Sept 14 Kick-off and Mentors' day; Nov 16 Morning Mentors' day and Afternoon Investors' day; Nov 29 Jury and Awards
  • The program will be held in OpenZone: the scientific campus of Zambon which includes startups but also established high standards biotech and medtech companies

Special Focus Events

The selected teams will take part in the acceleration program running from September, 14 to November, 18.

They will receive an intensive training, support from international experts, dedicated mentorship, business services from Deloitte, legal advice from the law firm Bird&Bird and technical support from Zambon.

The value of the entire program is over €50.000.

The Open Accelerator program will be delivered in English.

Upon completion of the acceleration program, the most promising projects, selected by a distinguished jury, will have the opportunity to:

  • Co-develop their projects with Zambon as strategic Partner;
  • Get milestones-based Seed Investment up to €100.000;
  • Have Labs and Office Spaces for free in OpenZone;
  • Connect with a high profile network of scientific experts and business leaders;
  • Receive Advisory services from Deloitte and legal support from the law firm Bird & Bird.
